Thinking about buying a home in Italy? You’ve probably heard some “facts” that might not actually be true.
Let’s clear things up so you can start your Italian property journey with confidence.
Myth 1: Foreigners can’t buy property in Italy
Not true! In most cases, foreigners can buy property here.
The only thing you need to check is whether your country has a reciprocity agreement (accordo di reciprocità) with Italy.
If yes – you can buy without restrictions.
If no – you’ll need an Italian residence permit and local registration (residenza).
Myth 2: Buying property automatically gives you an Italian residence permit
Unfortunately, no.
Owning property in Italy does not grant you the right to live here permanently. A residence permit must be applied for separately, and property ownership alone is not a valid reason for it.
Myth 3: Property in Italy is unaffordable for the average person
This is one of the biggest misconceptions. Italy offers an incredible variety of properties for every taste and budget.
Yes, there are luxury villas on the Amalfi Coast — but there are also charming homes for under €50,000, and even symbolic “€1 homes” in certain towns. About houses for one euro, by the way, we have already written here.
